NUC approves establishment of Zamfara State University as the 162nd university in Nigeria

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted approval for establishment of Zamfara State University, Talata-Mafara, as the 162nd university in Nigeria.

The Executive Secretary of NUC, Abubakar Rasheed, announced the approval during a meeting in Abuja with the governor of the state, Abdulaziz Yari, and his technical committee.

According to Mr. Rasheed , the university will become the 47th state university in the country with effect from  March 12.

The Executive Secretary urged the state government to adhere strictly to the technical advice which includes the rules and regulation of the commission.

He said JAMB, TETFUND and NYSC had been informed of the creation of the university.

He said Zamfara is the last state to establish a state university in Nigeria.

“There are 161universities in the country, 41 are owned by the federal government, 46 are owned by state government, 74 are privately owned but there is only one private university in the North West geo-political zone. There are 270 application for establishing more universities, hopefully two or three are from Kano and Kaduna,” he said.

In his remarks, Mr. Yari said the emergence of the new university will not affect the development of the existing state university.

He said his administration has earmarked N3billion as a take off grant for the university, aside the  provision of the minimum required structures.

“Out of the N3billion, N1billion is for the staff training, N1billion is for the procurement of equipment  and the last N1billion is for stabilisation funds. The reason for the delay in establishing the university is that the government had to focus on primary and secondary education in order to improve the sector,” he said.
The governor said the university will kick off  for the 2018/2019 academic session.

Zamfara State was created in 1996 and was the only state that did not own a university until this approval.

The NUC was established in 1962 as an advisory agency in the Cabinet Office. In 1974, it became a statutory body.
