The cause of the incident was shrouded in mystery, as a version said they were beaten by invisible hands. News of the incident spread like a wild fire, as it drew a crowd to the hotel. The brothel, owned by a lady and said to be notorious for sex workers, was alleged to have experienced such an incident before, which was allegedly covered up.
The transition Committee Chairman for Umuahia North, Chief Okezie Ezeigbo, who confirmed the incident, described same as “unfortunate.” He said: “It is very nasty; I could not understand why a brothel is located in the heart of the city, where kids live and grow.
They harbour criminals, who hibernate there. It is totally unacceptable to us.” An eyewitness, who did not want his name mentioned, said they heard the commercial sex workers shouting ‘ghost’ while fleeing from the brothel.
He said: “Most of us, who were around the place this morning (yesterday), believed that it must have been a spiritual attack. But it is left for the police and the doctors to determine the cause of the deaths and those who are still unconscious.
“The owner of the brothel is a lady who lived in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, before relocating to Umuahia, where she opened the brothel business, after she bought and renovated the building.” The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Leye Oyebade, confirmed the incident, but said that the Criminal Investigation Department was still investigating the matter.
